One semester internship: Details

Applications are invited from the final year students for the below programme. The CONDITION is that the internship has to be done at the same place as that of summer internship. You may send the application to me with all the details and relevant documents through email/ in person by 10th Aug. We shall decide on the application by 16th Aug.

 Guidelines for 6-Month Industrial Internship
for B Tech 4th Year students

It is being proposed that in order for the students to learn more beyond class room and to enhance their employability, the final year students may opt for industrial internship  of 6-month duration after 6th semester .  It will be essential to carry out one project during  internship, which will be assigned in consultation with  the concerned organization and  shall carry the same credits as the course work of the 7th semester.

Those who do not opt for the same, shall be attending the regular courses of 7th semester in the University. Following guidelines shall be followed for the allotment and evaluation of the project:

1.     Project Selection:

The Department would seek the names of the students interested in attending 6 months internship with  industry. The department shall try to place maximum number of students in the industry. Once the industry has been finalised, the faculty would try to develop the project, in consultation with the Project Manager(s) and in turn shall allot the same to the students.

The interested students would also be encouraged to discuss industrial options with the Project Engineer or Project Manager during their 4-6 weeks of summer training (after completion of 3rd year). The student will submit a brief proposal consisting of proposed methodology and outcomes, along with a timeline. This proposal will be reviewed by a panel of 3 faculty members, selected and approved by HOD/ Dean, and will be verified from the concerned organization as well. After the project has been vetted and verified, the same shall be allotted to the students which (s)he shall be undertaking. After the acceptance of the project by the Department, the same shall be communicated to the concerned organization. The concerned organisation shall provide a certified letter to this effect, including the duration, title and scope of the project and the contact details of the supervisor.

2.     Monitoring:

The project of the student shall be monitored on a continuous basis by the department. The department shall assign this work to two full time faculty members, who would personally visit all the project sites, at least twice in the six months period. During the visit, the faculty member shall interact with the supervisor and other members on the site to get an honest assessment of the work being done by the student. The faculty member shall also verify the reports submitted by the student to the department. Based upon his assessment, the faculty member shall award him grades, which shall be further converted into marks after the two monitoring assessments

If the faculty finds that the student is not adhering to the work plan/ not reporting/ or otherwise not being sincere in his/ her efforts, the project may be terminated with immediate effect and the student shall be sent back and declared "fail" in the project and shall have to repeat the year.

Weightage for the two on-site assessments shall be 20%

3.     Continuous Assessment:

The student will maintain a daily diary (similar to the one issued for summer training), to be provided by the University, and will report weekly, with a report of the work performed (report format to be designed separately) signed by the concerned supervisor of the industry, to the concerned academic department through email.

A monthly progress report will also be submitted by concerned project supervisor at the place of training (in a format to be designed). However, this shall be very minimal form where the regularity/ punctuality/ work progress shall be reported to the concerned department.

The student will report to the university for 2 internal assessments, one each at the end of 2nd and 4th month of the project. If the student is placed far away, the same can be conducted over skype or video-conferencing. Each of these two assessments shall be done by a panel of three departmental faculty.

The weightage of CA shall be 40%

If the student misses any of the two or both the assessments due to any reason, the same may be rescheduled, as per the convenience of both, but not later than 2 weeks from the earlier scheduled date. However, if the student fails to appear in the rescheduled assessment, his project may be cancelled and be declared failed and shall have to repeat the year.

4.     Final Assessment:

The student will need to undergo a final assessment at the university campus by a panel of one external expert and departmental experts through presentation and viva. A report on the work done shall also be submitted by the student in a bound form, at least two weeks before the final assessment.

The weightage of the final assessment shall be 40%

If the student fails to appear in the final assessment for any reason,  he may be given an option to appear for the same at the end of summer term. However, if he fails to appear even in the summer term, then the current rules applicable to those not appearing in the  shall apply.

5.     Dates:

·         The project shall be finalised by the department not later than 30th June
·         If the project is being developed by the student during the summer training, the same shall be finalised  by 30th July.
·         Each department shall release the final list of students undergoing the industrial project, latest by 31st August after the approval of the Dean
·         The first monitoring visit shall be completed by 30th Sep
·         The first assessment shall have to be done latest by 15th Oct.
·         The second monitoring visit shall be completed by 15th Dec.
·         The second assessment shall have to be completed by 15th Dec
·         Final assessment shall be done alongwith the practical examination of the running term

6.     Undertaking:

The student opting for the programme shall write an undertaking, on a non-judicial stamp paper stating that he/she has chosen to do 6-month industrial internship on his/ her own, and that in case he/she  is found not adhering to the rules and regulations of the company and university (which may change with time, although the rules once framed shall be the same for all the students of any particular batch and shall not be changed mid-way), he/she may be asked to withdraw from the programme and may have to repeat the year.

There shall be no extra fees charged for the same. However, the travel, food and stay cost shall be borne by the student and/ or concerned organisation/ industry. The university shall not bear any of these costs. Any other charges of the company shall also have to be borne by the student and shall have to be paid directly to the company.

The student shall also have to give an undertaking to the effect that by opting for the industrial internship he/she  may not be able to attend any on-campus placement drives taking place during the semester, although the University shall not prevent any eligible student from attending any such drive.

7.     Parent's Consent:

Parental consent for this internship is mandatory. The department shall make sure that the student submits an undertaking duly signed by the parents. The undertaking shall also be verified by the department, by talking to the parents and their consent is recorded on the form. The parents shall also be informed about the situation in case the student does not adhere to the rules and regulations or creates any problems for the industry in any way.
